Hotel Retlaw in downtown Fond du Lac opened in 1922 as the creation of Walter Schroeder, who spelled his own name backward for the hotel, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Staff and guests describe cups that fly off carts, ice that shoots from the ice machines, faucets and lights switching on and a sense of Schroeder's presence, and one room, 717, is the one most often named. A renovation in 2019 restored the building, and the hotel remains open for stays and events.
