Native peoples used the waters of this steaming lake for healing long before settlers arrived, and the first building went up in 1864 as the Hot Lake Hotel, a whole town under one roof with a post office, dance hall, blacksmith shop and bathhouses. In the early 1900s Dr. W. T. Phy turned the third floor into the Hot Lake Sanatorium, nicknamed the "Mayo Clinic of the West." It closed soon after his death in 1931, a 1934 fire destroyed more than half of the original building, and the brick building that survives, which dates from about 1906, later served as a flight school, a nursing home and a short-lived nightclub before standing empty for some 15 years. It was bought in 2003, renovated and reopened as a lodge.
Roadtrippers reports that guests have seen ghosts and heard the screams of former patients, that a piano on the second floor is heard playing by itself, and that the spirit of a gardener who died by suicide on the grounds is said to linger; its writer was woken at 3:22 a.m. when her bed shook. The building appeared on Scariest Places on Earth in 2001. Jefferson Public Radio reported in 2014 that its owner at the time had not experienced anything herself.
Day-use soaking passes need a reservation, and a small museum of medical antiques is on the third floor; overnight guests can self-guide through the building. Hours and ghost-tour schedules were not in any source found, so call 541-963-4685 or check the lodge's website before going.
