Halfway, Oregon

Cornucopia grew after Lon Simmons found gold in 1884 and had at least 500 men by 1885, with the Last Chance, Queen of the West, Union-Companion and Red Jacket mines. It was largely abandoned after gold mining was shut during World War II. Cabins, mine remains and a seasonal lodge sit high in the mountains north of Halfway, and some structures are private.
Reached by road from Halfway; summer hiking and winter snowmobiling are the draw.
