The Hornet Spook Light, also called the Joplin Spook Light, is a famous light that people have reported along a dirt road near the Oklahoma-Missouri border for more than a century, appearing as a bobbing ball of orange or white light that moves, splits or retreats as watchers approach. Local legends tie it to a murdered miner, to lovers who died, or to the spirits of Native Americans on the Trail of Tears; none has ever been proven, and researchers have suggested it may be car headlights. It is one of the best-known unexplained lights in the country.
A public rural road; the best viewing is after dark along the road near the state line. The pin is approximate, so use signs and local advice, and keep to the road and respect private land.
