Completed in 1904 at a reported cost of $125,000, the three-story, 16-room Brown Mansion in Coffeyville was built for businessman W.P. Brown and his family. His daughter Violet lived in the house until she sold it to the Coffeyville Historical Society in 1970, and it has been a house museum ever since. Visitors and locals have long told of pipe smoke drifting through the rooms, the sound of crying, and apparitions identified as Violet, a servant named Charlie, and a boy named Donald; neighbors also reported green lights on the grounds in the years when the empty house had no power. The museum's director says she has seen no evidence that the house is haunted, yet the historical society itself advertises paranormal events here, so the museum and the ghost stories coexist openly.
House museum run by the Coffeyville Historical Society. Tours run on the hour in the afternoon, and the society also hosts occasional paranormal events. Admission is charged, so check the society's site for current times.
