Historic Fort Snelling stands above the meeting of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers and was Minnesota's first permanent military post, begun in 1820 and now run by the Minnesota Historical Society. Early soldiers faced high mortality from disease, accidents and harsh discipline, and the fort's darkest chapter came in the winter of 1862-63, when roughly 1,600 Dakota people were held below it, with hundreds dying of exposure and disease. Visitors and local lore link the Round Tower and the commandant's house to apparitions and cold spots, and the Historical Society's October Lanterns & Legends tours retell the fort's haunted stories. The place carries painful history, and the stories are best approached with respect for the Dakota who suffered here.
Open seasonally, usually Thursday through Sunday, with admission; check the Minnesota Historical Society's site for hours and for October evening tours.
