The Wabasha Street Caves are sandstone caves dug into the bluff above the Mississippi River in St. Paul, once used to grow mushrooms and later as a Prohibition-era speakeasy and nightclub. Stories say gangsters came here in the 1930s, and that three of them were gunned down in the caves. The owners tell of men in 1920s dress seen walking the passages and a ghostly bartender who still likes to serve drinks. The caves host tours, swing dancing and events, including a Lost Souls tour that focuses on the ghost stories, which are legend rather than documented fact.
Tours run on select days, usually Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, with a Gangster Tour, a Cave Tour and the Lost Souls ghost tour; check the venue's site to book.
