Glastenbury thrived briefly during Vermont's logging and charcoal boom in the mid-1800s, with settlements at South Glastenbury and Fayville, then lost its people after the mountain was clear-cut and the railroad stopped in 1889. The area lies in Green Mountain National Forest and is known to hikers for the Long Trail and for the Bennington Triangle legend, a set of unexplained disappearances between 1945 and 1950, including hiker Paula Welden in 1946; writer Joseph Citro, who coined the name, notes mundane explanations for such cases.
Backcountry hiking on the Long Trail; little of the town is left to see.
