Students, faculty and staff at the Everett Mansion have reported strange noises, furniture moved with no explanation, flickering lights, a white mist lingering in the library, whispers, windows that open on their own and doors slamming, and a nearby dormitory has been linked to white orbs, voices and rattled doorknobs. The legend is of a woman in white, said to be the spirit of Everett's first wife, who is said to have died by suicide after learning of her husband's affair with the nanny, who in turn is said to have hanged herself on the third floor; a hooded figure is also said to haunt the grounds. Ghost Hunters' TAPS team investigated the campus in the 2014 episode "Darker Learning," tracking a figure on thermal camera that appeared to move between two walls in a third-floor hallway. The stone castle was built in 1911 by Bennington businessman Edward Everett and was the center of Southern Vermont College until the college closed in 2019. Some say it inspired the house in Shirley Jackson's novel, though others point to Jennings Hall at Bennington College. The campus has since changed hands, with a resort redevelopment approved. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Not open to the public; the former campus is private and under redevelopment. Please do not enter the grounds.
