Madame Sherri's castle was a three-story stone chateau with Roman arches built in 1931 on Rattlesnake Mountain in Chesterfield by Antoinette Sherri, a New York costume designer who bought about 600 acres and entertained her theater friends with lavish parties. The house burned in 1962, after being ransacked a couple of years earlier, and the stone arches and stairs that remain sit in the Madame Sherri Forest, which was donated to the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests in 1998. The Chesterfield Historical Society ranks the ruins among New Hampshire's top ten haunted places. Visitors report strange noises, ghostly figures, and music and laughter heard on the staircase, where Madame Sherri's apparition has been seen.
Public conservation forest with a short trail to the ruins and a loop trail. Stay on the paths, do not climb on the old walls, and visit in daylight.
