The YWCA opened the Hotel Figueroa in 1926 as a safe place for women travelling alone. At 13 storeys, it was built to the city's height limit of the day. Its Emerald Room, once the main dining room, served as Lyndon B. Johnson's campaign headquarters during the 1960 Democratic National Convention. The hotel has seen two murders, both of women killed by the men they were with, in 1929 and 1950, as well as a suicide. Guests have reported televisions switching on in the middle of the night, an elevator stopping at floors no one has called, flickering lights, and unexplained sounds in the hallways. The hotel closed for restoration in 2015 and reopened almost three years later.
Operates as a working hotel open to guests.
