Staff working nights at the Crest Theatre described voices in the empty house, music coming through a sound system that had already been switched off, and cold spots, most often around aisle 8, attached locally to a rumour of a man who died inside the building, for which no record has been found. United Artists built the Art Deco house on Main Street in El Centro; sources disagree on whether it opened in June 1931 or in September 1932. Fox West Coast Theatres had taken it over by 1941 and remodelled it in 1952, reopening it as the Crest. It stopped showing films in 1999 and stood largely empty for about a decade before it was renovated into the Crest Event Center, which opened in 2015; by December 2020 it was shut again and listed for sale.
