Allensworth was founded in 1908 by Lieutenant Colonel Allen Allensworth, who was born enslaved and became the highest-ranking Black officer of his day, with four other settlers as a self-governing community for African Americans. Its schoolhouse, hotel, church, library and homes are preserved as Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, and the site is included as a landmark of that history rather than for ghost stories.
Exteriors are viewable during regular hours; interiors open during special events and by arrangement.
