The Battery Carriage House Inn, built in 1843 on South Battery, was part of a mansion's grounds and sheltered Confederate soldiers when cannons were set up nearby. Charleston tourism and ghost writers describe two spirits: a headless torso said to moan in Room 8, linked to an explosion that killed soldiers, and the ghost of a son of the family who is said to have killed himself in 1904 after returning from Yale, said to haunt Room 10. They are legends, and the inn is a working bed and breakfast.
