The Dock Street Theatre on Church Street began as the first building in America constructed as a theater, in 1736, and burned in 1740; the site later held the Planters Hotel before it was rebuilt as a theater in the 1930s. It is often called the most haunted place in Charleston. Visitors and actors describe spirits on stage and above the rafters, and a woman in a crimson gown on the second floor whom lore names Nettie Dickerson, said to have been struck by lightning on the hotel balcony.
Working theater (home of Charleston Stage); open for performances and occasional tours, so check the box office.
