The Baker Hotel opened in 1929 as a 14-story resort of more than 400 rooms built for the mineral-water trade in Mineral Wells, and it closed in 1972. It is among the best-known haunted buildings in Texas. The most repeated legend is of a woman, said to have been connected to the hotel's owner, who leapt to her death from the seventh floor; maids are said to have found lipstick on glasses in empty rooms and smelled her perfume. The hotel was featured on Travel Channel's Ghost Adventures. A multi-year restoration has been under way since 2019.
Closed to the public during restoration, so there is no public access to the interior; the building can be seen from the sidewalk downtown. Reported reopening dates have ranged from 2026 to 2028, so check the hotel's website.
