Local legend holds that a woman was left at the altar on her wedding day in the 1930s and, overcome with grief, drowned herself. Motorists on Whirlwind Road have long reported a soaking-wet woman appearing at the roadside, sometimes seeming to ask for a ride, who vanishes as soon as their attention turns elsewhere — sightings reported by ordinary drivers and by police officers alike.
Scenic public road through farmland and estates in Wallingford. There is nothing to see beyond the road, and the neighbors live along it, so keep to the road's edge and respect their privacy.
