Wauconda Cemetery sits along what was once the route of the Palatine, Lake Zurich and Wauconda Railroad, a short-lived line that ran from 1912 to 1924 using a secondhand 1885 engine nicknamed "Old Maud" — the tracks passed directly behind, and in places through, the cemetery grounds. Local legend holds that the cemetery is haunted by a man who lost his life trying to catch the train, falling under its wheels.
