The U.S. Capitol, first occupied by Congress in 1800 and used as a hospital and barracks during the Civil War, has its own ghost lore, which the Architect of the Capitol has written about. The best-known tale is the Demon Cat, a black cat said to appear before national tragedies such as Lincoln's assassination, the 1929 crash and 9/11, first reported by a night watchman in the early 1800s. Other tales mention a worker killed in the Rotunda and a Civil War soldier.
Free public tours start at the Capitol Visitor Center; book ahead through the Visitor Center or a Member of Congress. Independent ghost tours walk Capitol Hill outside.
