Ford's Theatre opened in 1863 and is where President Abraham Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865; he died the next morning in the Petersen House across the street. The site is now a National Historic Site and working theater with a museum. Ghost-tour websites say Lincoln walks the route to the Petersen House and that actors in the presidential box feel an oppressive sadness, but National Park Service materials do not describe hauntings and some visitors report feeling nothing unusual. The accounts are tour lore.
National Historic Site and working theater; timed tickets are needed, so check fords.org or nps.gov for tours and shows.
