The Castle, also called the Joseph Johnson House, on Craven Street in Beaufort's Point neighborhood is one of the town's best-known old houses, a privately owned Gothic Revival mansion. Local legend says it is haunted by Gauche, a French dwarf jester said to have come with the explorer Jean Ribault in the 1500s, who taps out messages in old French, moves furniture and leaves red handprints on windows. The Exchange Club's annual Beaufort Ghost Tours and Halloween openings include the house.
Private home not open to the public except on special tours, such as the Exchange Club's ghost tours in October; it can be seen from the street. The pin is approximate.
