Staff at Moon River Brewing Company tell of a ghost named Toby in the basement, where candles snuffed on tables are said to flicker back to life after twenty minutes, and of James Stark, shot dead in the hotel, whose spirit is said to disrupt billiard games by moving balls so they miss their pockets; every floor has its own reported activity, and Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures have both visited. Built starting in 1819 and opened in 1821 as the City Hotel, this building was Savannah's first hotel, housed the city's first post office and hosted guests including naturalist John James Audubon and General Winfield Scott. During repeated 19th-century yellow fever epidemics, the upper floors served as a makeshift hospital where an estimated hundreds of patients, many of them children, died. The building later sat empty for decades after Hurricane David tore off its roof in 1979, before reopening in 1999 as Moon River Brewing Company.
The brewery and restaurant closed in June 2024, and the 1821 building is not open as Moon River Brewing. Check who occupies it now before going.
