The Texas Governor's Mansion in downtown Austin, a Greek Revival house completed in 1856 for Governor Elisha Pease, has been home to Texas's governors for well over a century. It was damaged by an arson fire in 2008 and restored. Texas ghost lore says Sam Houston, who is said to have paced its floors during the secession crisis in 1861, still walks here, and one account tells of a portrait light that was found switched back on overnight. Moaning has also been attributed to a young man from a governor's family said to have died in the house in the 1860s.
Free guided tours are offered by reservation through the Texas State Preservation Board, with no walk-up tours, so book at least a week ahead. It is a working residence, so the grounds are only viewable from the street at other times.
