Pascagoula, Mississippi

The Pascagoula River is known as the Singing River for a low humming sound that people report hearing near it, especially on still late-summer evenings. The best-known explanation is a legend, retold for generations along the Gulf Coast, of the Pascagoula people walking into the river together, singing, rather than be conquered by the Biloxi. The story is a legend, not a documented event, and it is retold today with respect for the Native peoples of the Gulf Coast. The sound itself has never been explained to everyone's satisfaction.
The river runs through Pascagoula and Jackson County, with public boat launches and parks along its banks. The map pin is approximate. Do not trespass on private riverbank land.
