At the Shoshone Ice Caves, staff and visitors have reported hearing voices and heavy footsteps deep in the caves when no one else is around. Discovered by accident in the 1880s by a boy searching for a lost goat, the Shoshone Ice Caves are lava tubes formed by ancient volcanic eruptions in the Black Butte Crater lava field, with ice up to 30 feet deep even in summer. Early residents harvested the ice commercially before the site became a guided tourist attraction.
Cave tours are closed for the 2026 season after a walkway collapse in August 2025 injured three people. The gift shop and museum are open. The owners hope to reopen tours next summer.
