Shasta was a Gold Rush supply center and county seat whose brick storefronts line Highway 299 as roofless ruins. The restored 1861 courthouse, with its courtroom, jail and gallows, is now the state park's museum, where visitors sometimes mention a "ghost" in the jail, a story with no documentation.
Ruins can be seen along the highway; the courthouse museum keeps limited hours, so check California State Parks.
