The Red Onion opened in 1897 as Skagway's most expensive brothel, serving the men pouring through town for the Klondike gold rush. It runs today as a saloon and restaurant, with the original cribs upstairs preserved as a brothel museum that interprets the lives of the women who worked there. The spirit most often named is Lydia, one of those women. Staff describe footsteps crossing the original floorboards upstairs, a trace of perfume, and cold spots, and downstairs they report glasses sliding along the bar on their own.
A working saloon and restaurant on the ground floor; the upstairs brothel museum is open for guided tours seasonally.
