This wood-and-brick building at Lincoln and Belden went up in 1882 in a neighborhood once used as a cemetery for cholera victims and Confederate soldiers; during Prohibition it ran as a speakeasy. Red Lion Pub opened here in 1984, directly across the street from the Biograph Theater, where John Dillinger was shot. Staff and regulars describe encounters with as many as seven different spirits, including a scruffy cowboy, two men said to have died in a fight, and a woman whose presence is announced by a strong, unexplained scent of lavender perfume.
Operating English pub on Lincoln Avenue, closed early in the week. Check its hours before going.
