Founded in 1858 by showman P.T. Barnum, who is himself buried here, Pine Grove Cemetery is one of Ansonia's oldest burial grounds. Visitors have long reported the sound of children playing, chains rattling, unexplained warm spots amid the surrounding cold, and figures seen near the gates and walking the grounds — reports with no documented origin behind them, run-of-the-mill for an old cemetery, though persistent enough to have outlasted more than one skeptical visit meant to debunk them.
Active cemetery open for visits from sunrise to sunset. Be respectful of burials and mourners, and keep to the paths.
