Pendleton King Park sits on the former Bugg Plantation, purchased before 1842 by Judge John P. King and donated to the city of Augusta by his son Henry upon his death. The Bugg Family Cemetery, a walled Revolutionary War-era burial ground with roughly eight graves, four of them unmarked, still stands within the park; visitors report a white figure darting in and out of the trees around it and through the cemetery itself. Legend also holds that a camellia bush once growing beside the King mansion would bloom unusually heavily whenever a family death was coming. After the mansion later burned to the ground, stories arose that the family kept celebrating even as it burned; on still nights, some visitors say they can still hear the echo of music, laughter, and clinking glasses where the house once stood.
City park open daily during daytime hours, with trails and gardens. Visit in daylight and respect posted rules.
