Completed in 1842, this three-story stone jail is the oldest of its kind in Alabama. It served as the Coosa County jail until 1938, then held county records. The Coosa County Historical Society opened it as a museum in 1973, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
Southern Spirit Guide lists the Old Rock Jail among Alabama's haunted jails, and local legend says a man who died by suicide inside still walks its halls.
The grounds are open all year at the corner of Jackson Street and AL-22 in Rockford; the interior opens only on special occasions through the Coosa County Historical Society.
