Before it was the Homewood Public Library, the building on Oxmoor Road was the Homewood Church of Christ. The city bought it in 1984 and opened the library in 1986. Staff and patrons have reported women's voices and laughter from the basement rooms that once served as Sunday school classrooms, books coming off the shelves, and doors slamming open and shut on their own. The library's director has said plainly that the place is haunted and "as creepy as can be at night". Rather than play the reputation down, the staff have embraced it, and the library has run ghost tours of the building as a fundraiser. Those who work there describe the presences as good-natured.
A public library with regular hours.
