The Pine Barrens, or Pinelands, cover more than a million acres of sandy forest in southern New Jersey and are home to the state's best-known legend, the Jersey Devil, a winged creature said to have been born to a woman named Mrs. Leeds in the early 1700s. Sightings and tales of the creature have been told for nearly three centuries, and it is part of New Jersey's culture, even lending its name to the state's hockey team. The legend is folklore, and the Pinelands are a protected national reserve with many hiking and paddling areas.
Pinelands National Reserve with state forests and parks such as Wharton State Forest. The map pin marks the Chatsworth area, not a single site; the sandy back roads can be hard to navigate, so carry a map.
