The Myrtles Plantation was established in 1796 by General David Bradford as Laurel Grove and renamed the Myrtles in 1834. It operates as an inn with a restaurant and offers historical tours and evening mystery tours, and a 1992 photograph said to show a figure the property calls Chloe helped make it famous. Unsolved Mysteries and Ghost Hunters have both filmed there. The best-known legend, of an enslaved woman named Chloe who poisoned the family, is not borne out by researchers who combed the Woodruff records and found no such person, and the property itself attributes the deaths of a mother and two children in the 1820s to yellow fever. Visitors still report footsteps, voices, and the figures of women and children, so the Myrtles is better understood as a rich body of ghost lore than as a documented history.
Working inn with 20 guest rooms, a restaurant and coffee shop. Daytime historical tours and evening mystery tours (Friday and Saturday evenings) are booked online; overnight guests can also stay in the house and cottages.
