The Millicent Library in Fairhaven was given to the town in 1893 by the financier Henry H. Rogers in memory of his daughter Millicent, who died at the age of seventeen. Local stories say her spirit walks the halls, sometimes outlined in blue light, and that passersby have seen a girl in the turret window at night. Others tell of a woman dressed in black who moves along the upper-floor shelves and fades before anyone gets a good look. The tale that Millicent was buried under the building is only a rumor, but the library itself remains a working and much-loved public library.
