Built in 1949 and named for the economic importance of shade tobacco to the community, the Leaf Theater opened with a grand premiere hosted by Roy Rogers. It closed in 1980 as multiplexes drew audiences away, then was purchased and donated to the Quincy Music Theatre group in 1983, who restored it through grants and local donations; it now hosts live musical theater. Staff describe numerous spirits throughout the building, in the balcony, backstage, and around the main floor seating, all considered friendly, since performances here have never been derailed by any of it.
