Bellamy Bridge, built in 1914, is Florida's oldest surviving metal bridge and one of the state's most famous ghost stories. Local legend holds that Elizabeth Bellamy, an 18-year-old bride, burned to death here on her wedding night in the 1830s — in reality, contemporary letters and an 1837 obituary confirm she died of fever, not fire; the burning-bride detail was blended into the story from an 1840s novel decades later. What's real is that sightings go back at least to an 1890 Marianna newspaper report, and visitors along the Bellamy Bridge Heritage Trail still describe unusual blue-and-white lights, a misty shadow, and the faint form of a young woman in white near the old bridge.
Reach the bridge on the half-mile Bellamy Bridge Heritage Trail, open free to the public during daylight. Park at the trailhead on Highway 162; Bellamy Bridge Road no longer reaches the bridge. The trail is in a wet river bottom and can be muddy or flooded. Do not climb on the old bridge.
