Kirwin was a gold and silver camp near Spar Mountain that reached about 200 people in some 38 buildings in the 1890s and banned saloons and gambling. A 1907 avalanche killed three and the town never recovered. The Forest Service stabilizes what remains at the head of the Wood River, where rusted tools lie as left, and a local legend ties Amelia Earhart to a nearby dude-ranch cabin, a claim not firmly documented.
Four-wheel drive or a long hike; the road crosses the Wood River, and bears are common.
