Historic Rugby is a Victorian utopian village on the Cumberland Plateau founded in 1880 by the English author Thomas Hughes, and Kingstone Lisle is the house he built for his mother. Local lore calls the village one of the most haunted in America, and the house's resident is the Snoring Ghost, said to be Hughes himself, who pulls blankets back and is heard snoring. The house is entered only on guided tours of the village. The stories are part of Rugby's heritage tourism and are told with gentle humor.
Open only on guided tours of Historic Rugby, with admission; check the village's site for tour times.
