Built by Randall Holly Brannon, the Holly Theatre opened on July 12, 1948, with a Georgia-marble facade and seating for 500; it closed in the 1970s, sat vacant for two decades, and was revived by community volunteers who reopened it in 1994, with a further $650,000 renovation completed in 2021. Some say the theatre is haunted by Edwin Booth, the celebrated 19th-century actor and brother of Lincoln's assassin, though no documented connection ties him to Dahlonega. Staff and patrons report glowing white figures passing behind the etched glass windows after hours, a sudden cold presence, flickering lights, and misty shapes appearing on the screen during showings.
