Stiffy Green is remembered locally as a bulldog belonging to John Heinl, who reportedly sat crying beside his owner's casket through the funeral before Heinl was entombed in the family mausoleum here in the 1920s. The Vigo County Historical Society's own research complicates the legend: by their account, Stiffy was never a living dog at all, but a cement lawn ornament that sat on the Heinl family's porch and was simply a favorite of John Heinl's. Heinl's living relatives had the statue removed from the mausoleum to protect it, and it has been on display at the Historical Museum of the Wabash Valley since 1989, alongside a replica of the mausoleum itself. Visitors to the real mausoleum still describe seeing Stiffy and his owner walking the cemetery grounds together at night.
Large historic cemetery that is gated after hours. Stiffy Green was moved to the Vigo County History Center. Visit in daylight and respect graves and mourners.
