Mackey Cemetery, in rural Clark County near Marshall, gets its nickname from a real, gruesome case: a caretaker who killed his family with a hatchet and hid their bodies in a well behind his cabin — a story later dramatized on a television crime series. Local legend holds that the man's spirit still watches over the cemetery and surrounding woods, sometimes accompanied by a pair of stone wolves that flank the cemetery's front steps, which some say occasionally leave their posts to patrol the grounds with him. Paranormal investigators have documented orbs and other unexplained phenomena in photographs taken here, though as with many rural cemeteries, it's best visited in daylight and in a group.
Remote, long-inactive rural cemetery on Macke Road. Visit during daylight, stay out of the surrounding fields, and treat the graves with respect.
