Greenwood Cemetery is widely regarded as one of central Illinois's most haunted sites. Its Civil War section holds the unmarked graves of Confederate prisoners who died of yellow fever while being held here; locals say their spirits still walk the hills and have been known to confront visitors. Unexplained lights have been reported along the cemetery's southern edge for decades. The cemetery's best-known resident is the "Greenwood Bride," frequently seen and heard weeping among the graves.
Public cemetery in south Decatur, open during daytime hours; the gate can close near dusk. Occasional guided tours have been offered. Treat the graves with respect.
