Elkhart Cemetery is the resting place of Richard J. Oglesby, a three-time Illinois governor, U.S. senator, Civil War major general, and close friend of Abraham Lincoln, who died in 1899 and was laid to rest in a mausoleum here — his funeral procession included Lincoln's own son, Robert. Local legend holds that Oglesby's wife, Emma, still visits his tomb some nights, kneeling before the vault for a few quiet minutes before departing back across the bridge into town.
Historic cemetery on Elkhart Hill with the Oglesby family graves and a small chapel. Visit during daylight and treat the graves with respect. The Oglesby mansion nearby is a separate site with its own limited tour hours.
