Fort Monroe has a long list of reported apparitions: Jefferson Davis, held here as a prisoner after the Civil War, is said to walk the ramparts at night, Abraham Lincoln is reported in Quarters 1, young soldiers are seen on the ramparts, and most sightings are in the moat-encircled Casemate area, where investigators have reported disembodied voices, horse hooves and orbs in photographs around the gun-wells. One investigator recorded a little girl's voice calling for her cat inside Quarters 1, and staff have reported a gray cat disappearing around corners. These are local accounts, which the Army itself presents as folklore. The moated stone fort at the tip of the Virginia Peninsula was completed in 1834, and is also known as Freedom's Fortress for sheltering people who escaped slavery in 1861. It is a National Park Service national monument with the Casemate Museum inside the walls.
