Fort Abercrombie, on the Red River of the North, was North Dakota's first military post, established in 1858 as a way station for wagon trains, steamboats and settlers. During the Dakota War of 1862 it was besieged by Dakota warriors for more than six weeks, an episode that cost lives on both sides and that remains painful history. North Dakota lore says the spirits of soldiers and of Dakota people who died there are sometimes seen. The state historic site includes reconstructed blockhouses and a museum.
