The best-known ghost at Fair Lane is said to be Ford's butler, who hurries through the hallways, follows visitors, and cleans up after them by picking up gum wrappers and dirt; visitors have also described cold spots and a feeling of being watched in the master bedroom and guest rooms, thought by many to be Henry and Clara Ford, doors and windows that open and close on their own, and wispy shapes in photographs. A Michigan investigation team reported floating orbs and mist, and activity is said to peak around the anniversary of Ford's death. Fair Lane was the Dearborn estate of Henry and Clara Ford, a 56-room mansion built around 1915 and the place where Henry Ford died in 1947. Ownership has passed from the University of Michigan to the nonprofit Henry Ford Estate, which is restoring the house.
The house is closed for restoration, and the Henry Ford Estate opens it only occasionally for special events. The gardens and grounds are free and open daily (the official site lists 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; other listings differ). Check henryfordfairlane.org or call (313) 668-3200 before going.
