Staff and visitors at the former El Rey Theatre describe unexplained hot spots in parts of the building and figures moving through the rooms, taken locally to be moviegoers and firefighters from the night of the fire. The El Rey opened on 15 April 1937 as a 900-seat, air-conditioned picture palace, billed as "The House of Courtesy," and it burned on 6 August 1975, during a screening of The Towering Inferno, a coincidence striking enough that a Trivial Pursuit edition asks what was playing that night. The loss was total, and the shell stood vacant for more than twenty years before a 1998 remodel reopened it as the Kelley Brothers Brewing Company, which closed in 2007. The building operates today as The Veranda events centre.
The original theater is gone; the building now operates as a brewery and restaurant, open to the public during business hours.
