Staff and drinkers at the Clayton Club report glasses sliding along the bar, objects moved overnight, cold spots and lights that switch themselves on and off. The Clayton Club is the oldest continuously operating business in Clayton, built around 1873 by Jacob "Jake" Rhine, who ran a hotel, saloon and ice cream parlour here until 1898. Carl Berendsen bought it in 1905, renamed it the Clayton Club and used it as saloon, restaurant and family home until Prohibition. The bar survived Prohibition, the Depression and a long succession of owners; the Milano family bought it in 1959, and Dolores Austin restored it in 1996. The Eagle Saloon, with which this building is often confused, was a separate premises put up next door in 1900 by Manuel Nunez and demolished in 1950.
Operates as a working bar, open to the public during business hours.
