Built in 1896 by William Winstead Thomas at the corner of Milledge Avenue and Baxter Street, this Beaux-Arts mansion earned the nickname "Wedding Cake House" for its exuberant architectural detailing; it's now home to the University of Georgia's Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. Campus legend tells of a bride, sometimes named as Thomas's daughter Isabel and sometimes as Susie Carithers, daughter of a later owner, who hanged herself in the attic after being jilted at the altar. Sorority sisters who live in the house's "Engagement Suite" report doors opening and closing on their own, faucets turning on and off, an antique parlor piano playing by itself, and flickering lights — activity locals consider more mischievous than malicious, since residents of that room have a reputation for finding real love not long after moving in.
